Houses of horror: White House Farm, Tolleshunt, D’Arcy, Essex

The White House Farm murders were described by The Times in 2001 as one of the most infamous criminal cases of the previous 20 years. Police were alerted to the shootings at around 3:30 am on 7 August 1985 by Bamber, who told them his father had just telephoned him to say his sister, Sheila, had gone "berserk" with the father’s rifle.

Bamber and the police made their way to the farm, and after waiting outside until daylight, police broke the door down to find Nevill, June, Sheila and her two sons, Nicholas and Daniel, shot 25 times, mostly at close range. Sheila was found dead on the floor of her parents’ bedroom, with the rifle still up against her throat, in what appeared to be a murder-suicide.

Sheila had twice spent time in a psychiatric hospital being treated for schizophrenia just months before the murders. Bamber told police she might have been especially distressed that night, because her parents had asked her to consider placing her sons in temporary foster care, as she was having difficulty coping. The prosecution argued that there was no evidence that this discussion had taken place, and that Bamber’s allegations were part of his setting the scene for Sheila to take the blame.

The police accepted Bamber’s position that Sheila was responsible until a month after the murders, when Bamber’s girlfriend told them he had confessed to having hired a friend to kill his family, though the person she said Bamber implicated had a solid alibi.

The prosecution case against Bamber hinged on several key points. First, they argued that there was no evidence that Bamber’s father had telephoned him, and that if Bamber was lying about the phone call, he must be the killer himself.

They argued that the father was too badly injured after the first shots to have spoken to anyone; that there was no blood on the kitchen phone; and that he would have called the police, not Bamber. Second, they argued that the silencer was on the gun when the shots were fired. This was based on the discovery of what they said was a spot of blood inside the silencer. If the silencer was on the gun, Sheila could not have shot herself, because her reach was not long enough to hold the gun at her throat and press the trigger. They also argued that she was not strong enough to have overcome her father, who was over six feet tall, in what appeared to have been a violent struggle.

Bamber’s defence team has over the years has attempted to challenge the evidence. They allege that a police log suggests Bamber’s father could have called the police that night. They argue that the silencer may not have been on the gun during the attacks.[16] They have produced crime-scene photographs that, they say, suggest Sheila’s body and the gun were moved by Essex Police, who then restaged the crime scene because they had inadvertently damaged it.

They also argue that the silencer evidence cannot be relied upon, because the silencer was found in a cupboard at the farmhouse by Bamber’s relatives weeks after the murders, and they stood to inherit the estate if he was convicted.

Jeremy Nevill Bamber was convicted in England in 1986 of murdering five members of his adoptive family his father, mother, sister, and her six-year-old twin sons at his parents’ home at White House Farm, Tolleshunt D’Arcy, Essex, in the early hours of 7 August 1985. He was sentenced to five life terms with a recommendation that he serve at least 25 years, and in 1994 was told he must spend the rest of his life in jail.

Britain has its share of prolific murder mystery writers, Agatha Christie being among the most famous. The White House Farm Murders reads like an Agatha Christie whodunnit and has all the makings of a bestseller; a wealthy inheritance, a mentally ill adopted daughter, a pathological stepson, a girlfriend turned state’s witness, and a pathological killer motivated by greed and hatred. This case however is anything but fiction. It proves that adage “truth is stranger than fiction,” with ease.

Aftermath

Because of his conviction the estate passed to Bamber’s cousins, some of whom were involved in finding the crucial evidence against him. After Bamber’s conviction one cousin on his mother’s side, Ann Eaton, moved into White House Farm and she and several others being Sarah Jane Eaton, Pamela Boutflour, and Robert Woodwiss Boutflour, acquired ownership of the caravan site. Bamber alleged that these financial considerations meant the extended family wanted to see him convicted and they may have set him up. The cousins responded that Bamber was a psychopath and his allegations against them were an attempt to harass and vilify them.

Bamber is the only full-term lifer who refuses to admit guilt

A campaign gathered over the years to secure Bamber’s release and from March 2001 several websites were set up to discuss the evidence. Bamber used one of them in 2002 to offer a £1m reward for evidence that would overturn his conviction. His case was taken up by former MPs George Galloway, Andrew Hunter and Bob Woofinden, a journalist who specializes in miscarriages of justice. Woffinden argued between 2007 and 2011 that it was Sheila who shot her family then watched from an upstairs window as police gathered outside the house before shooting herself. He changed his mind in May 2011, writing he had come to believe Bamber was the killer. However, Bamber passed a lie detector test in 2007.
